An obituary posting said Brantley died on Saturday, Jan. 6. He was 79 years old. Brantley also had served on the township committee.
Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted his condolences after the former mayor's death was announced.
"Michael was a remarkable public servant and will be deeply missed by the Neptune community," said Gov. Murphy.
State Sen. Vin Gopal, a Democrat whose district includes Neptune Township, also remembered Brantley's legacy.
"Sending love and prayers to the family of former Neptune Mayor Dr. Michael Brantley - a wonderful man and one of my earliest supporters," State Sen. Gopal posted on Facebook. "He made history countless times in Neptune."
A public viewing for Brantley will be held at James Hunt Funeral Home in Asbury Park on Friday, Jan. 12, from 4 to 8 p.m.
